In the past 18 years, Shin Shin Educational Foundation has invested nearly 10 million dollars in donations, and put in countless human and material resources, and worked together with Chinese Overseas offices and local Education Bureau at all levels to support primary schools in China's rural areas. To achieve our stated mission, Shin Shin has applied three stages of development into operation.

Stage I – School Construction/Renovation
Since 1997 when Shin Shin was founded, 333 Shin Shin schools and reading rooms in 25 provinces or municipalities have been renovated or constructed, and over 320,000 children have been benefited by Shin Shin Educational Foundation.

Stage II – Basic Facility Improvement
Since 2002, we began to realize that the difficulty lies not in building or remodeling a new school building, but in ensuring the quality of education that the children are receiving. Therefore, we started “follow-up programs” to help address some of the quality issues beyond brick and mortar. From purchasing needed educational equipment (desks, computers, etc.), offering scholarships, providing Hepatitis B vaccines, to training English teachers, sending books, we worked our best to make a difference in those children's lives.

Stage III – Education Initiatives
While the effort of school construction/renovation and basic facility improvement continue, the demand to enhance the learning environment (including educational hardware, software, and teaching/learning techniques) in those disadvantaged rural schools is ever mounting. In the last three years, we have taken a series of steps to further strengthen our educational programs and to position ourselves for greater impact. The impact relies not only on our operation strategies and limited financial resources, but also on the availability of our volunteer resources and know-hows. The following programs have been initiated or strengthened to produce wonderful results, leading Shin Shin one step closer to our vision.

  • ECTT (English and Computer Teachers Training) Programs
  • E-Learning
  • “Reading Corners” in Literacy Program
  • University Outreach Programs

Education is a highly specialized and sophisticated profession and requires trained expertise. To serve Shin Shin schools more effectively, a deeper understanding of China educational policy and system is a must. Therefore, in-country presence and collaboration with local educational institutions and business enterprises is critical for success. China's Ministry of Civil Affairs has formally approved Shin Shin's application to establish a representative office in Beijing, which will be of great help for the foundation to continue its work in promoting education in remote, poverty-stricken areas in China.

New School and Program Management System Launched

2014 was full of challenges for the Shin Shin IT team. As the Shin Shin school projects continue to expand and the Beijing Office continues to grow, we redesigned the school and program management platform to reduce the manual operation, ease online applications, and automate data updates. This platform not only manages school information, but also maintains program data, application processes, school surveys, and teachers experience sharing.

These data are very important for Shin Shin's long-term sustainable development, especially for providing timely information to the public, reporting progress regularly to supporters, thus driving the Foundation to reform the traditional operation mode. Due to the high complexity of the system, currently we have launched the Phase I of the system in Spring 2015.
