Inner Mongolia Shin Shin Schools

Inner Mongolia is a Mongol autonomous region, located in the northern part of China; it borders Mongolia and Russia to the north. It has an area of 1.18 million kilometers, occupying 12% of China's land area.

Inner Mongolia is a cultural hybrid between Mongol (17%) and Han Chinese (79%). Although in recent decades Mongol elements were slowly degraded by the majority Han Chinese population influences, for both political and demographic purposes, Mongol language and culture has been maintained to provide for a unique identity to the area. The Han Chinese of Inner Mongolia speak a variety of dialects, depending on the region. Mongols in Inner Mongolia speak a variety of dialects of the Mongolian language. By law, all street signs, commercial outlets, and government documents must be bilingual, displaying both Mongolian and Chinese. A recent trend has also taken place with public transportation, where all announcements are also bilingual. Many ethnic Mongols, especially those from the newest generation, speak fluent Chinese, since Mongolian is beginning to recede from everyday use in urban areas. Ethnic Mongols in rural areas, however, have kept their traditions. Farming of crops such as wheat takes precedence along the river valleys. In the more arid grasslands, herding of goats, sheep, and so on is a traditional method of subsistence. The vast grasslands have always been symbolic of Inner Mongolia. Mongolian art often depicts the grassland in an uplifting fashion, emphasizing the nomadic traditions of the Mongol people.

There are six Shin Shin schools in Inner Mongolia, which were built from 1999 to 2004. One school in Wulateqianqi is established for Mongol children only. Since 2004, all six schools received computer equipment from Shin Shin and participated in the book club. Two teachers from Hangjinqi also traveled far to Hunan to be part of the English Teachers Training Program. Other follow-up support and scholarships also benefited the children in this remote region.
